An amazing number of buildings, 2,354 to be exact, top out at over 328 feet in height in Hong Kong. That is easily the greatest number of tallest buildings in the world, and is almost three times the number of tallest buildings in the second city on this list.
Obviously, real estate is at a premium in Hong Kong, and building owners have responded by building tall buildings. The skyline in Hong Kong is just packed with tall buildings.
Many of the tallest buildings in Hong Kong are office buildingsand or hotels, but as you go down the list of tallest buildings you see more and more residential buildings filled with condos, co-ops and apartments for rent, sale or lease.
2. New York- 794

There are 794 buildings in New York City that are over 328 feet in height. That is the most of any city in the United States, and second most in the world. Well behind Hong Kong though.
Living in the New York City area, I know first-hand that real estate is at a premium in Manhattan, New York City, and is very expensive. Most of the tallest buildings in New York, including the Empire State Building, are located in Manhattan. Plenty of the hotels in New York City are over 328 feet in height.
3. Tokyo- 556

The city of Tokyo, Japan has 556 buildings that are over 328 feet in height. With some nine million people packed into a relatively small amount of real estate in Tokyo, the city needs many tall buildings for housing, business and retail purposes. Even though Tokyo has many tallest buildings, no single building in the city tops out over 1,000 feet. That's probably due to concerns about earthquakes like the one that occurred in2011.
4. Shanghai- 430
The city of Shanghai in China has 430 buildings that top out above 328 feet in height. Shanghai has the largest population of any city in the world with some 18 million people. Obviously, real estate is at a premium when you are talking about that many people living and working in a city.
The tallest buildings in Shanghai are a mix of hotels, office and residential buildings. Many of the buildings have apartments for rent or sale, as well as condos and co-ops for sale or lease. Eighteen million people have to live somewhere.
5. Dubai- 403
There are 403 buildings that top out over 328 feet in Dubai, the most heavily populated city in the United Arab Emirates. That is the fifth most tallest buildings in the world. Dubai though has the most number of really tallest buildings in the world. There are 18 buildings in Dubai that over 1,000 feet in height.
Dubai is the most centrally planned of the cities on this list. That shows in that the top six tallest buildings in Dubai are all either hotels or residential buildings. The tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa at 2,717 feet in height, is located in Dubai.
